WILLEMSTAD – Defensie gaat een viertal drones met twee grondstations plaatsen en testen op Curaçao. Het onbewapende systeem komt op Hato.
Curaçao is gekozen vanwege de gunstige weersomstandigheden en beschikbaarheid van het luchtruim. Het systeem wordt ondertussen ook voor Defensietaken ingezet. De Curaçaose autoriteiten kunnen de drones aanvragen ten behoeve van opsporing en toezicht.
Ook in counterdrugsoperaties gaan de drones gebruikt worden. Het systeem bevat sensoren die zowel op land als boven zee langdurig kunnen observeren en informatie verzamelen, zonder dat er een piloot aan boord zit. Dankzij de besturing per satelliet is het toestel wereldwijd te bedienen.
