E-Flight, dat vorig jaar op Teuge Airport van start ging met de eerste elektrische vliegschool van Europa, breidt uit naar Bonaire. De luchthavens in de Caribische deel van het Koninkrijk willen binnen een jaar of vijf elektrische vliegverbindingen tussen de eilanden tot stand brengen.
De nieuwe vestiging van E-Flight op Bonaire richt zich niet alleen op studenten die woonachtig zijn op de ABC-eilanden zelf, maar ook Nederlandse studenten die een deel van hun opleiding in Bonaire willen doen. Daarnaast hoopt de onderneming studenten uit Zuid-Amerika en het zuiden van de VS aan te trekken. E-Flight gaat opereren onder Europese EASA-regelgeving.
Om te anticiperen op snelle groei en uitbreiding op andere ABC-eilanden is E-Flight een nauwe samenwerking aangegaan met het Franse Green Aerolease. Dat bedrijf heeft een vloot van vijftig elektrische Pipistrel Velis Electro’s die ze als ‘Airplanes As a Service‘ (AAS) aanbieden aan vliegscholen met duurzame ambities.
E-Flight zegt sinds de start van de activiteiten te hebben ondervonden dat de vraag naar elektrisch vliegen groot is. Het aantal studenten is inmiddels gegroeid tot dertig en binnen het eerste jaar werden meer dan tweeduizend elektrische vluchten uitgevoerd.
Het bedrijf gaat ook EASA-brevetten aanbieden in de regio. E-Flight verwacht ook op dit vlak een competitief voordeel te hebben omdat er naar eigen zeggen steeds meer landen en maatschappijen volgens de EASA-regelgeving opereren. Terwijl de meeste lokale vliegscholen studenten opleiden voor een Amerikaans FAA-brevet.
