Het luchtruim Sint Maarten is zaterdagavond gesloten nadat de luchtverkeersleiding niet voldoende staf op de been kon brengen. Een reden voor het tekort aan personeel werd niet gegeven.
De sluiting van de Princess Juliana International Airport gebeurde om 21.00 lokale tijd. Eerder was sluiting van de luchthaven aankondigt om 18.00 uur, maar die tijd werd later opgeschoven naar 21.00 uur.
Officieel meldde de luchthaven dat vanwege waarborging van de veiligheid sluiting plaatsvond, vanwege het beperkte personeel bij de luchtverkeersdiensten.
Hoe de situatie morgen overdag zal zijn, is niet bekend gemaakt.

Op Sint Maarten is de incidentie van covid-19 bijna drie keer hoger dan in Nederland. Het RIVM meldt in zijn weekoverzicht dat 3.135 mensen
per 100.000 inwoners op Sint Maarten afgelopen week een covid-infectie hebben opgelopen. In Nederland is dat 1.147 per 100.000 inwoners.
